Keswick had first push back. Both teams started strongly. St Bees’ prolonged attacks on Keswick’s goal were ably defended by Jenny Hunter in centre defence. In a strong bid to get the ball up the pitch, Hunter made several passes onto the wing to Katie Fisher in left defence and Ella Lister on the right. Two short corners were given to St. Bees for feet in the D, but the ball was well defended, and St. Bees failed to score on both attempts.
Keswick kept the pressure on and managed to make a few passes through doughnut Jodie Cowperthwaite to midfielders Anna Shenton, Kate Bell, Xanthe Sparke and Esme Jackson. After many attacks by both teams, the whistle blew to show the end of a tiring first half for Keswick’s defence. The score was 0-0.
Keswick showed real fighting spirit in the second half. Neat shots down the line by Lister and Fisher, along with tactful feeds by Sparke in the middle, meant that many balls were being sent through to the forwards. Ria Muhamad made a strong run down the left wing, aided by Grace Law, but couldn’t finish off the attack before St Bees’ quick defence gained possession. In a brief lapse of concentration on Keswick’s part, the ball was hit narrowly into the goal, out of goalkeeper Lauren Edmiston’s reach.
Despite being 1-0 down with little time left, Keswick Girls kept a positive attitude and continued to fight for balls. With maximum effort, Keswick managed to prevent St Bees from scoring another goal, meaning that after a tiring and enjoyable match the score was 1-0 to St Bees.
